The 5th Color Workshop in Tasmeem Doha 2006

Students' final works
There are many formal similarities between the Iranian and Arabic alphabets. The 5th Color considered this when using the Farsi typefaces for the workshop at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar. The goal of the workshop was to create multiple compositions out of the initials of the students first, middle and last name using the Farsi typefaces. The workshop was divided into 4 parts:
February 17th 2006:
9:30am - 12:00pm; The 5th Color showed a short film on the history and art of Iran concentrating on calligraphy and typography. After the film the workshop was explained to the students. The 26 students were then divided into 4 groups between the 4 members of the 5th Color. The students had their choice of 4 Farsi typefaces to begin their compositions. 2:30pm - 5:00pm; After creating several compositions the students, along with each member of the 5th Color, chose the best solutions to hang for a critique. Next the students looked through the work and talked about the compositions, and to end the day the members of the 5th Color along with VCUQ Professor Leland Hill chose 33 out of the 136 compositions for the students to continue working on the following day.
February 18th 2006:
9:30am - 12:00pm; Upon arriving to the second day of the workshop, the students regrouped with their member of the 5th Color to consider the addition of color to the compositions. Once an agreeable color composition was selected and approved, the students enlarged their compositions to 50x70cm and began printing their posters. The posters were then hung at VCUQ to be presented at Tasmeem Doha 2006
