This contains 13 of the papers given at the first Symposium on the History of Printing and Publishing in the Languages and Countries of the Middle East, held in the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz in 2002. All of them relate to printing in the Arabic script in the 19th and 20th centuries, except for one by Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès calling for a cultural rebirth of Arabic typography in the 21st century. This last pursues themes which are now quite familiar to the Khatt community, urging a "new digital aesthetic for Arabic type", and it is accompanied by 8 pages of specimens of modern and experimental type-faces and page designs.
