History of printing in the Arabian peninsula, i.e. in the Ottoman provinces of Hijaz and Yemen, in the 19th century. Includes bibliographical and statistical analyses of the output of the presses, and illustrations of title-pages of books and front pages of newspapers. These show the cramped and utilitarian style of the naskhī type-faces in use, but also the picturesque deployment of fleurons and other typographic ornaments to create decorative borders and panels.
