Starting out in type design.

Hello there.
I'm an Arab design student looking to start out in Arabic type design. And so far it seems a bit intimidating, to say the least. So I was wondering if anyone would kind enough to give me a few pointers on how to start out.

dumb question for MAC users

Would somebody please tell me where the "mid-word hamza" is mapped? I know that's not the real name for it and my Arabic teacher would disapprove, but I assume you know what I mean?

For example: to type "your friends":

أصدقاءك

ُThat hamza should have a connecting bar underneath it. Where is the correct hamza mapped? I'm using the Arabic keyboard config as opposed to Arabic-QWERTY.

Also, if anyone has advice about typing in Arabic let me know. I'm pretty comfortable with it by now, but I'd be interested in learning more.

Microsoft Traditional Arabic Font

Hi,

I have tried to search the forums for anything on this subject but could not find anything. I am designing a book in Adobe Indesign ME CS4 on mac and we are using Microsoft’s Traditional Arabic font in Regular and bold. I am not able to export a PDF as I get a message saying the font cannot be embedded due to licensing restrictions. Does anybody know who designed this font and is it possible to buy a unrestricted version? I have tried calling Microsoft Corporation but with no success. I am able to print the file as Postscript and then open it in Preview which converts it to a PDF. I can then save as a PDF from here but this seems to only work with A4 page size. My book is square and I cannot get this method to work for my size.

Thanks in advance.

VoIP Anti-blocking

VoiceGuard™ Solution for VoIP Anti-Blockade
1. Overview
Yahoo messenger, Skype, Microsoft Messenger and Vonage offer a subscriber the ability to "call" someone using Softphone/Gateway ATA/IPPhone/IAD. However, several ISPs are blocking or degrading this service in order to force a consumer to use a ISP sponsored service. States such as the UAE block this technology outright while US corporations, such as Clearwire, claim that they might degrade the quality of competing services by adding choppy and delayed services.

SpeedVoIP is a leader in circumventing VoIP blocking imposed by ISP or Telco. For vision of Net Neutrality, VoiceGuard™ is created to address a growing number of ISPs who either degrade or block voice services over their networks. VoiceGuard™ gives choice back to the subscribers or customers of ITSP.
2. Technology
※VGCP(Voice Guard Control Protocol)
VGCP is a proprietary layer 2 link protocol working at between IP stack and nic driver for VoIP anti-blocking. The core patent-pending VGCP is industrys most state-of-the-art voice service provider class security protocol whose scalability and flexibility results in not to compromise voice quality and overhead. VGCP controls and monitors full voice signaling and media flow intelligently, meanwhile disguises sip and rtp packets into normal allowed data packets such as DNS and TFTP, and makes two-way encryption and decryption driven by user-customized policy. VGCP is fully transparent to upper SIP proxy or UA which means VoiceGuard™ can work with any 3rd-party Softphone/ATA/Gateway/IPPhone/IADs and SIP proxy or server not like some competitors which take effect on their own device and softswitch.
※SidePass
Due to unique architecture, when deploying VoiceGuard™ Border Controller(VGBC) at customer CPE side, VGBC can work in the way similar to that of soho router, but it only encrypts and decrypts SIP and RTP packets on link layer, not to handup these packets to IP stack for forwarding while bypassing other data packets originating from SIP terminals. In this scenario, peak throughput and minimal CPU overhead can be easily achieved.
※TrafficDisturb
Current leading carrier-class VoIP blocking platform such as NarusInsight can detect VoIP traffic with a special algorithmtraffic classification in the dark which filters VoIP traffic based on behavioral-signature model. Compared with previous one of payload-signature model, NarusInsight is more sophisticated and robust. After deep study into traffic behavior of SIP UA, Proxy and Registrar, VoiceGuard™ can real-time incorporate light-weight traffic for puzzling and bypassing VoIP blocking system without consuming more bandwidth and compromising voice quality. Even in some circumstance, VoiceGuard™ can simulate traffic behavior of universal data networking protocol such as OICQ, MSN and so on.
3. Key Features
 • Maximum call completion rate and maximum voice service duration
 • SIP core standards and a variety of drafts supported
 • Proprietary link layer protocol for controlling
 • Any 3rd-party Softphone/ATA/Gateway/IPPhone/IAD and SIP Proxy/Registrar/SBC supported
 • The most comprehensive codec including g.711/g.723/g.729ab/iLBC/gsm/speechX supported
 • Bypassing Narus and Verso platform detection
 • Flexible user-customized encryption policy driven
 • Strict call path protection and security up to termination
 • Only simultaneous signaling/media/T.38 fax packet support across any firewall.
 • No network or firewall modification is required.
 • Excellent voice quality without any latency and performance compromise
 • Small footprint terminal SDK .
 • Available on all major platforms.
4. Technical Specification
• UDP
• TCP
• RTP/RTCP
• T.38 Fax
• SIP - RFC3261~3266
• STUN - RFC3489
• Symmetric Response - RFC3581
• Dns/Tftp/Radius wrapper
5. How it works and deployment

6. VoiceGuard™ Products ( Hardware and Software Option)
• VoiceGuard™ Standalone Client (VGSC) for Windows – Perform encryption for any brands of ATA/Softphone, such as Linksys PAP2 & X-lite
• VoiceGuard™ Client SDK (VGSDK) - Incorporate voip anti-blocking capability into existing legacy softphone and dialer running on Windows(Softphone/Dialer customization service is also available with VGSDK)
• VoiceGuard™ SPE VoIP Adapter (VGSPE) – VoIP anti-blocking ATA device which is available in 1 - 4 FXS & FXO ports
• VoiceGuard™ Border Controller (VGBC) – Support any brands of ATA/Softphone for existing legacy ATAs, such as Linksys PAP2
• VoiceGuard™ Communicator (VGCommunicator) – Fully SIP compatible Softphone/Dialer for PC2Phone and PC2PC services

4 Ways to Replenish your Creative Spirit

4 Ways to Replenish your Creative Spirit
1. WHAT WERE YOU JUST THINKING?
Daydreams are fertile ground for the imagination to soar. As you sit absorbed in a problem, notice when you get lost in a day dream. What were you just thinking of? Your unconscious is a rich source of images, ideas and experiences that lead to new connections, and fresh thinking. Daydreaming is a way to incubate the components of a problem and uncover solutions. How can you apply the images and thoughts of your daydream to the project you are working on? How could the image be a metaphor? Can your day dream show you a new perspective? Try a technique called `forced connections' If you were thinking about a bird, for example, think about the qualities of a bird, what a bird symbolizes for you, and how that could help you in your project.
2. CAPTURE YOUR IDEAS
Keep a notebook handy to record your daydreams and ideas that come to mind while watching TV, attending a lecture, meeting with clients and so on. Collect pictures and articles of people, places, things and ideas that please you. You will develop an idea file that will help stimulate your thinking on future projects. Use your imagination to make connections between information you collect and a project you are working on, to trigger new ideas.
3. BE PLAYFUL
Delight yourself and you delight the world. You are richly rewarded when you apply your passion to what pleases you. Remember what you loved to do as a child and bring the essence of that activity into your work. This is a clue to your genius; to your natural gifts and talents. Da Vinci, Edison, Einstein and Picasso all loved to play and they loved to explore. Their passions resulted in genius. Even God likes to play. Lila is Sanscrit for God's play. What is God's play? Creating the Universe!
4. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH INSPIRING PEOPLE
As an artist, I'm alert to the people, places and things that nourish my spirit and replenish me. One day I told a friend, who is an artist, poet and mystic, I've been a little envious of the world of Gertrude Stein. Her Paris home was a salon for the leading artists and writers of the period between World Wars I and II. I wanted to be at the pulse of great ideas that make a difference in the world today, and create my own salon.
We decided to host Soirées for Smart People, inviting artists, poets, scientists, doctors, physicists and change agents. Food, wine and a room full of art provide the framework for pods of rich conversation and stimulating ideas. People are thrilled at the notion of participating in a Soirée for Smart People, the idea strikes a chord somehow. This makes it easy to invite interesting people I barely know. I've even had people contact me from England and the US to tell me who in Vancouver I should include at my soirée.
The beauty of the evenings is their simplicity. The dinner is potluck. There is no agenda. Guests arrive knowing that they can expect to enjoy a shared experience that enriches the human spirit. Try hosting your own salon, inviting a mix of inspiring people from different professions. A variation on the theme is to invite people to bring poetry or a musical instrument. Have fun!

"The Lebanon" lyrics to Cell Phone

She dreams of nineteen sixty-nine
Before the soldiers came
The life was cheap on bread and wine
And sharing meant no shame
She is awakened by the screams
Of rockets flying from nearby
And scared she clings onto her dreams
To beat the fear that she might die

And who will have won
When the soldiers have gone
From the lebanon
The lebanon

Before he leaves the camp he stops
He scans the world outside
And where there used to be some shops
Is where the snipers sometimes hide
He left his home the week before
He thought hed be like the police
But now he finds he is at war
Werent we supposed to keep the peace

And who will have won
When the soldiers have gone
From the lebanon
The lebanon
The lebanon
From the lebanon

I must be dreaming
It cant be true
I must be dreaming
It cant be true

And who will have won
When the soldiers have gone?
From the lebanon
The lebanon
The lebanon
From the lebanon

Arabic Letraset?

I was curious if anyone had a sheet or two of Arabic letraset?
For an advanced graphic design class we have been working on creating typographic fiction-- creating letterforms that experiment with form. (for an example please check my profile page) So I was going to work on a little project of my own but using Arabic letterforms. If anyone would be willing to do a trade or have suggestions for this project I would be forever grateful.

Thank you--

Im also looking to download lots of arabic fonts to use in my upcoming projects. Any links or websites where I can do so, will be much appreciated.

Are we doing enough?

Hallo every one.

Every one of us trying to do his best to make the Arabic signs and letters look more attractive in the eyes of the viewer.

Every one of us is an Ambassador of this Art.

People who are living in non Arabic countries sometimes are confronted with many obstacles just because they are either Oriental or Arabic.

Projects and Foundation like Khat Foundation are good tools to do so.

What can we do more in order to polish this image and show the Arabic calligraphy from its best view?

Discussions of the Typographic Matchmaking and Tasmeem Projects

Recently there was held an Evening of Arabic Typography in Amsterdam, where Tom Milo and Tarek Atrissi aired their views. This link contains a video of the fascinating discussions.
river-valley.tv/conferences/arabic_typography_2008/
For this occasion I drew a cartoon showing my take on the amazing enthusiasm and creativity for Arabic typography in Holland. In the tradition of cartoons everything is presented in an satirical way, and I hope it will help us laugh at ourselves even while we discuss the issues in a serious and friendly manner. Do join Typophile and add to the discussions there. Huda and Edo please forgive me I never had the pleasure to see you so my depiction of you was just guesswork! :)

Hello to contributors and seek for help to develop an arabic tuluth font

I'm expertised on vector drawing on computers and dream to develop an arabic tuluth font depending on khatt of a master calligrapher (khattat). but I have no info about principles of Arabic font building. Latin fonts are relatively easy to build but Arabic is not. Matter is how to provide the command to fix the letters together when needed. I don't know how Windows do it in currently available arabic fonts. Is it time to wake up from my dream or should I seek this info everywhere?
Best wishes

Colour palettes in the Middle East

I know that green just about the most popular colour in the region but know very little about the association of other colours. A google search provided nothing but fairly glib, generic westerner orientated results with the odd snippet about other cultures. Does anyone know of a good resource that can help me find out more about how colours are interpreted in "Arab eyes"?

PS. I'm glad this site is in English. It is (like it or not) the main language of the internet and if this site was solely in Arabic, then it could easily become a place where (trendy non-Arab) people would come to skim for visual ideas to create "cool Arab(ish) style" designs without having much understanding of it's real value. Style over communication? No thanks. There too much of that already.

From characters to words

Hopefully someone can help me out here. We bought the book 'The Typographic Matchmaking' so that's how we ended up here.

We are working with an Arabic translater and a designer. We are translating currently on a Apple Mac. We're using the Keyboard Viewer to tyoe the translation [System Preferences, International, Input menu] but we can not 'glue' the separate characters together to words. There must be a trick/something we overlook currently. Who can help us out?

The questions are:
- What software on a Mac do you recommend for typing the Arabic translation?
- What input method do you suggest?
- How do we 'glue' together the separate characters [perhaps with a different input method the 'glueing' is not necessary anymore]?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Arabis and Farsi Print Fonts

Hi Folks,

I have two questions,

1) Which Arabic and Persian (Farsi) fonts are being used mostly in printing?

2) What font faces newspapers use in main text and headings in Arabic and Persian (Farsi)?

Thanks,

Can someone help me out please, I'm struggling here

Okay, so I'm building a dual language font in Font Studio, Roman and Arabic, living together in perfect harmony side by side in FontStudio, but when I export the font... all hell breaks loose.
Exported as Opentype TTF, and it works fine in my Middle Eastern version of InDesign, doing all those cool contextual substitutions and typing right-to-left etc etc. But. It doesn't substitute in Mellel, and my PC-based Saudi client can only see the Roman.
I'm doing something stupid, I can tell, but I don't know what it is.
Please can anyone help?
Cheers
Rob

PS Think that the project is fantastic, and the Typographic Matchmaking book has been my Arab Type 101 for getting up to speed on how to do typography in an unfamiliar character set. Thanks to you.

graduate paper about cultural posters

I study Graphic Design in the Netherlands. Here fore I’m in the last year and currently writing my graduate paper.
My purpose is to compare the cultural posters made in Europe with the cultural posters made in the Middle East. I have chosen this comparison because the situation in Europe and the Middle East are known in the Netherlands nowadays. However I understand that differences exist between different countries within Europe and within the Middle East.

To write a good and well-motivated paper, I need the input from different people. Therefore I ask you kindly to please answer (one of) my questions:
- What want designers to communicate in the Middle East and what are the purposes of these designs?
- Is there any political purpose or influence?
- Are country traditions involved in the design, and if so, why is this important?
- What are the differences and similarities between European-made and Middle East-made posters?
- What elements are important during the design (photographs, illustrations, typography, materials, techniques, etc)?
If you have any remarks or insights you want to share with me, do not hesitate to write me.

With kind regards,

Miranda de Groot
