Starting out in type design.

Hello there.
I'm an Arab design student looking to start out in Arabic type design. And so far it seems a bit intimidating, to say the least. So I was wondering if anyone would kind enough to give me a few pointers on how to start out.

I read your message and was wondering if anyone is helping you?

You can make a 'paper font' drawing the shapes on cardboard and setting up words and sentences then photocopying- this gives you practice in the shapes you need.

I am a beginner too and to make a computer font I started out using Font Creator software it is the simplest and has good instructions for the beginner. Now I am using Fontlab but it is difficult. Maybe Fontographer is better for you because it is a simpler program than Fontlab but it is from the same company and uses the same commands but less complicated.

To start I opened the Simple Arabic font installed in my Windows computer and deleted the existing glyphs (letter designs) and started drawing my own in their place - I am sure there is better idea to start!

Look at Pascal Zoghbi's page on Khtt he has something about how to start an Arabic font- the necessary encoding to use.

Good luck and Eid Mubarak

I hope this helps!

cheers,

excellent

I think it's great, If I ever get the chance to design or even fiddle with the idea of doing an Arabic type.

Thanks Nadine :)
