Typographic Matchmaking the Maghrib: Workshop II closing event

Casa Àrabe in collaboration with the Khatt Foundation, will host the closing event of the second workshop of the Typographic Matchmaking in the Maghrib project.

Moderated by Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès, director of the Khatt Foundation, the event begins with a keynote by Dr. José Miguel Puerta Vílchez, followed by presentation of the preliminary designs of the tri-script fonts families by their respective designers.

19.30 – 20.30 : Keynote guest speaker, Dr. José Miguel Puerta Vílchez, on Islamic Calligraphy and Moorish Spain.
20.30 – 21.30 : Public presentation of the preliminary design concept of the three tri-script font families.

Venue: Auditorium of Casa Árabe in Cordoba.
The presentation will be in Spanish (or translated to Spanish from English).

The great Arabic calligraphic legacy of al-Andalus

presented by Prof. José Miguel Puerta Vílchez, University of Granada.
Spain has one of the richest and exceptional calligraphic legacies of the Arab and Islamic world. The variety of styles developed in al-Andalus, from the monumental inscriptions, splendidly preserved in monuments such as the Mosque of Cordoba and the Alhambra in Granada, to the calligraphy of the decorative arts (ivories, metalwork, ceramics, textiles ...) and the book industry will be part of this conference, which will be illustrated with images and data on the architects and the historical and cultural circumstances in which each artistic variety was created.

José Miguel Puerta Vílchez, is an Arabist and Professor of Art History at the University of Granada. He has published The codes of utopia of the Alhambra in Granada (1990), History of the Arab aesthetic thought (1997), The Adventure of the Calamus (2007), Reading the Alhambra (2010) and The Poetics of water in Islam (2011). His translation work includes texts by Adonis, Sufism and surrealism (2008) and books of Ghada Samman, Beirut 75 (novel) and The Moon square (fantastic stories; Andaluz Translation Prize, 2008). He was co-director and editor of the Library of al-Andalus (9 vols., 2003-2013) and curator of exhibitions Twelve candles for Granada, the painter Kamal Bullata Palestinian and Syrian poet Adonis (Granada, Board the Alhambra, 1998), Freedom and innovation. Contemporary Arabic calligraphy (Arabic House, Madrid-Cordoba, 2010-2011) and arts and culture of al-Andalus. The power of the Alhambra (Granada, Patronato de la Alhambra-Andalusian Legacy Foundation, 2013-2014).

The Typographic Matchmaking in the Maghrib project aims to promote cultural dialogue and help develop local design skills and heritage. In its third edition, a group of European researchers (Dutch, Spanish and French) and Arabic (Moroccan, Tunisian and Lebanese), will investigate and develop fonts families that combine Arabic, Berber languages ​​and Latin.
