Book: Dr Geoffrey Roper

L'écriture arabe en question: les projets de l'Académie de Langue Arabe du Caire de 1938 à 1968.

MEYNET, Roland. Beirut: Dar el-Machreq, 1971. 142 pp.

A systematic and well illustrated account of more than 200 abortive schemes for modifying the Arabic script to meet the needs of mid-20th-century typography. It contains much on the vigorous debates between the modernisers and the always victorious traditionalists.

The 1955 scheme for entirely separate roman-style printed letters, by the Algerian academician Yahya Boutemène, was one of the more radical proposals.
