Arabic Pixel Type
Hi/Salam,
Wanted to know where I could get hold of some Arabic pixel type (use in Flash for clean rendering). I began making my own one, but need one soon for an upcoming project.
Thanks.
From characters to words
Hopefully someone can help me out here. We bought the book 'The Typographic Matchmaking' so that's how we ended up here.
We are working with an Arabic translater and a designer. We are translating currently on a Apple Mac. We're using the Keyboard Viewer to tyoe the translation [System Preferences, International, Input menu] but we can not 'glue' the separate characters together to words. There must be a trick/something we overlook currently. Who can help us out?
The questions are:
- What software on a Mac do you recommend for typing the Arabic translation?
- What input method do you suggest?
- How do we 'glue' together the separate characters [perhaps with a different input method the 'glueing' is not necessary anymore]?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Starting out in type design.
Hello there.
I'm an Arab design student looking to start out in Arabic type design. And so far it seems a bit intimidating, to say the least. So I was wondering if anyone would kind enough to give me a few pointers on how to start out.
Arabic Kufi Workshop
On the 28th and 29th of August I will be giving an Arabic kufi Workshop for non-Arabic speakers. The workshop will start with a lecture about Arabic Kufi style, then each participant will make his own square kufi pattern using Latin and/or Arabic letters. Any one interested in knowing more about Arabic letters and in participial Arabic kufi pattern can attend the workshop. The workshop will be giving in two sessions for 4 hours each. The workshop will be held in the El Hema Exhibition area in the Post CS building.
Any suggestions for the workshop are welcomed.
Okay, so I'm building a dual language font in Font Studio, Roman and Arabic, living together in perfect harmony side by side in FontStudio, but when I export the font... all hell breaks loose.
Exported as Opentype TTF, and it works fine in my Middle Eastern version of InDesign, doing all those cool contextual substitutions and typing right-to-left etc etc. But. It doesn't substitute in Mellel, and my PC-based Saudi client can only see the Roman.
I'm doing something stupid, I can tell, but I don't know what it is.
Please can anyone help?
Cheers
Rob
PS Think that the project is fantastic, and the Typographic Matchmaking book has been my Arab Type 101 for getting up to speed on how to do typography in an unfamiliar character set. Thanks to you.
Acquiring the new typefaces
The fonts are great as is the initiative itself, but how can one acquire these fonts?

I study Graphic Design in the Netherlands. Here fore I’m in the last year and currently writing my graduate paper.
My purpose is to compare the cultural posters made in Europe with the cultural posters made in the Middle East. I have chosen this comparison because the situation in Europe and the Middle East are known in the Netherlands nowadays. However I understand that differences exist between different countries within Europe and within the Middle East.
To write a good and well-motivated paper, I need the input from different people. Therefore I ask you kindly to please answer (one of) my questions:
- What want designers to communicate in the Middle East and what are the purposes of these designs?
- Is there any political purpose or influence?
- Are country traditions involved in the design, and if so, why is this important?
- What are the differences and similarities between European-made and Middle East-made posters?
- What elements are important during the design (photographs, illustrations, typography, materials, techniques, etc)?
If you have any remarks or insights you want to share with me, do not hesitate to write me.
With kind regards,
Miranda de Groot

dumb question for MAC users
Would somebody please tell me where the "mid-word hamza" is mapped? I know that's not the real name for it and my Arabic teacher would disapprove, but I assume you know what I mean?
For example: to type "your friends":
أصدقاءك
ُThat hamza should have a connecting bar underneath it. Where is the correct hamza mapped? I'm using the Arabic keyboard config as opposed to Arabic-QWERTY.
Also, if anyone has advice about typing in Arabic let me know. I'm pretty comfortable with it by now, but I'd be interested in learning more.

Hi Folks,

2) What font faces newspapers use in main text and headings in Arabic and Persian (Farsi)?
