Balance

Anyone who lives in a state of extremism will not survive for long. Not only is this a phrase of common sense, but it is also a central message of Islam. Balance is needed in every aspect of our lives; the balance of rest and activity, fear and love, hot and cold, light and dark. Even in art, the calligrapher searches for balance in his/her creations. Without the correct emphasis on certain shapes, curves and colours, which balance the words, they fade and disappear into the background. As an artist paints a reflection of her/himself, calligraphy trains the artist to balance life as if it were a word; placing the right emphasis on the right curbs in order to find the middle ground needed for the completion of a piece.
