Theater in Iran is ornamental not applied , it is also limited; Theater has been monopolized by special theatrical groups, special spectators, themes and places.
Although there is the motto in festivals “Theater for All”, most of theatrical artists in Iran have accepted that theater is for one special social level (intellectuals).
Popular Theater Group formed and it has been working to prove that the common opinion is too wrong.
Today is the time that drama should be freed and moved towards the public until all people could enjoy power and abilities of drama. This matter is crucial. Iranian contemporary society urgently needs creativity and awareness much more than other times because of its wide young population, socially-politically serious crisis in the Middle East, interior tensions, powerful influence of mass media and….
For this reason, Popular Theater Group(PTG) has highly focused on “Drama in Education” project and it produces and performs plays based on textbooks such as history, civics, life skills,literature,...at schools.

As the first step, we produced a play called:”First Session: History” and we have been performing it which is started from period of Ghajar to Islamic revolution of Iran in 1979.
We have highlighted not only the most important events and historical, national and popular characters’ lives but also hidden and unwritten aspects of history.
Our main goal is to make theater a powerful tool for cultural development and educational changes in Iran.
We have used techniques of Iranian traditional plays, Augusto Boal’s theatrical techniques and Paulo Freire’s Theory in the play.
You can watch a visual report of the play here. The photos were taken by Ghazal Mafakheri.
