Design Concept
The book design consists of alternating spreads, made up of a map, then followed by text, and so on. The book design was inspired by M.C.Escher’s Möbius Strip II drawing which stresses on a never-ending cycle. Just like the novel has two parts taking place at different geographic points, the book design has two sides stressing on this notion. One side evolves around the protagonist being in his homeland, and the other around him being in the land he migrates to. Furthermore, the lines on which the text is written increase in weight as one reads on. These lines symbolize the increasingly distressed mental state of the protagonist as he is about to leave his homeland. They also decrease across the spreads in which he is on his way back to his homeland. Nevertheless, the book is a never-ending cycle which ending point and starting point are one.
