The lecture describes the earliest Islamic art and architecture and its origins in Arabia and Bilâd al-Sha’m/Syria/Palestine with reference to the major holy edifices and the so-called desert palaces of the Umayyad rulers.

The art of the apogee of the Abbasid caliphate: Baghdad, Samarra and Raqqa, This module deals with the urbanism and architecture of the mosques, palaces and sports facilities such as racecourses and hunting reserves. The art includes carved stuccoes, paintings from Samarra, and the production of new artistic styles, such as glazed ceramics.
