15 November 2009, Dubai - design as reform, the traffic design competition vol. 2 officially launched last week with an intimate gathering of design and media professionals. Attendees were given a personal introduction to the competition and encouraged to participate in the 4 categories.

With over four months to go before the first submission deadline on March 6, 2010, plans are underway for regional visits with schools, universities and design firms. There will also be educational workshops and talks organised over the next few months, to prepare applicants with all the information necessary.

Rami Farook, Director and Founder of traffic says of the competition, ‘What we hope to achieve from this global initiative is to utilize the region’s history, tradition and social structure for a modern community’s needs’.

The four categories of design as reform reflect the dynamic design requirements of this region. Applicants are asked to reinterpret the following structures, without depriving them of their history, nor consequently, the reverence for these forms:
—The Mosque through Architecture
—The Majlis through Interior Design
—A Pattern through Graphic Design
—A Public Installation through Experimental Design

The winning entries in each category will be produced by traffic, along with competition partners.

Winners will be decided by an esteemed panel of judges who are:
Alexander von Vegesack, Vitra & The Vitra Design Museum
Dr. Sami Angawi, Founder & Director of the Amar Centre for Architectural Heritage
Renny Ramakers, Art Critic & Director of droog
Rami Farook, Founder & Director of traffic

The competition is open to students, professionals and enthusiasts from all over the world
with the award ceremony held in Dubai in June 2010.
