In collaboration with the Khatt Foundation, Sharjah Art Foundation is co-organising an Arabic Lettering and Ornament workshop led by Huda Smitshuijzen, AbiFares and Francis Ireifej. The workshop is designed to address a present-day approach to the ancient Arabic tradition of arabesque ornamentation. Join us in a week long workshop of ideas sketching, exploring lettering, complex letterforms and geometric configurations. Participants will produce orthographic drawings and learn 3D modeling techniques in order to fabricate 3D printed scaled models.

The workshop will conclude with an Open Studio of work produced on March 31, 2015.  

Time: 10am-6pm daily, Friday 2-8pm

Venue: Collections Building.
Last day for registration: 27 February 2015 (Limited spaces are available).

Participation fee: AED150 (The fee covers the cost of a text book titled Sculpting Type, an Introduction to CNC Typography by Edo Smitshuijzen required for the course).

Workshop Requirements:

— Participants should be proficient working with Adobe Illustrator and must have Rhinoceros 3D installed prior to the start of the workshop.

— Participants must own a laptop with Adobe Illustrator installed.
—  Participants should bring their own laptop for the duration of the workshop.
(For Mac minimum system requirement is Mac OS X 10.5).
—  Participants should be prepared to work intensively (investing their own time outside of workshop timings).
